Gun Legislation - Latest News

BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - We are living in a time where many people don't feel safe in their own neighborhood. As a precaution, they may keep a firearm in their home.
It's a constitutional right to keep and bear arms, but in Delaware some residents say that right has been taken away, by the Delaware State Housing Authority. "We would be able to protect ourselves if we were able to harbor those guns in our possessions," said Jay Flowers, a Bridgeville resident living in public housing.
Right now the Housing Authority is getting heat from state lawmakers and the National Rifle Association because they do not allow law abiding residents to own a gun in any of their complexes.
In a statement a spokesperson for the NRA says, "It's illegal for a public housing authority or any official to deny the Second Amendment rights to anyone based on socio-economic status."
WMDT spoke with a few residents who live in Laverty Lane, a Delaware Housing Authority complex. They say they feel safer knowing residents cannot keep guns in their home, but that's not a view that everyone shares. "What if someone was to come into your home? How are you supposed to protect yourself if the police aren't there to protect you? Self protection and home protection is very valuable," said Flowers. Flowers has lived at Laverty Lane for almost a year now. He says the neighborhood is usually safe, but things happen and if it does he wants the right to be ready.
Anyone found having a gun while living in public housing will be evicted. Officials with the Delaware State Housing Authority say they are reviewing the policy.
The NRA recently settled a lawsuit against the San Francisco Housing Authority for a similar issue, and their ban was lifted.
